Jesus Jones was "watching the world wake up from history" back in 1991. Over thirty years later, the waking up hasnât stopped. If anything, itâs accelerating.
This song was everywhere back then. I remember it playing through my radio while I explored dungeons in Zelda on the NES. I was 12, the same age my son is now. Back then, the magic of life was OBVIOUS. Somewhere along the way, I stopped noticing it.
But the truth is, magic never went anywhere. Itâs still here, waiting for usâright here, right now.
Suffering and Sin
Yesterday, I attended mass for the one-year anniversary of my sister Lesleyâs passing. As I listened to the priest talk about the resurrection of Christ, I noticed the crucifix hanging behind the altar. There it isâthe ubiquitous symbol of Christianity. Fixated on the suffering, the flesh, the material world that spirituality claims to transcend.
Do we DOUBT the resurrection? Thatâs the title of the album this song comes fromâDoubt. And this song? Itâs a spell. Do you doubt that?
Suffering isnât wrong. Itâs a signal, a doorway, an invitation to pay attention to what hurts. Jesus showed us that suffering is inevitable, woven into life itself, and into the beauty and selflessness of the crucifixion. But when suffering becomes the end of the storyâwhen we cling to it, glorify it, let it define usâthatâs the sin. Thatâs what keeps us stuck.
Suffering isnât failure. Itâs not something to avoid or fix. The material world isnât wrong, either. Itâs not "all there is" in the way we thinkâitâs not separate from spirit. The material world is the spiritual world. When we wake up, we begin to recognize the language of spirit: the symbolism, the patterns, the connections. Theyâve always been there, waiting for us to accept themâand in that acceptance, they reveal their beauty.
And not only thatâwe begin to move beyond doubt. We start to accept whatâs REALLY possible.
The Three Days of Doubt
Three days. Thatâs how long it took. Three days of "doubt." Three days of silence, confusion, and uncertainty. Then Jesus simply woke up.
The resurrection wasnât a grand spectacle. It was quiet. Personal. He just woke up. And thatâs the real magicânot something distant or untouchable, but something weâre all capable of.
The artistâs name, Jesus Jones, reminds us that following Jesus isnât about idolizing him or pushing him away by ending the story in our minds and hearts with his death. Itâs about seeing what he showed us is possible: waking up to the magic thatâs already here. Right here. Right now.
suffering, then resurrection - seems to be a pattern in life - bad days with grief and pain, if we wait 3 days, we feel relief...resurrection = rising above. Life seems to have this pattern, we get weighed down/buried by suffering, then rise above as we feel lighter and calmer. Jesus suffered deeply...having the support of his heavenly Father, his mother, Mary, his disciples, friends, Mary Magdalene, the thief at his side and the list goes on. We benefit from this model...family, friends, faith, prayer and the list goes on.
